Frequently Asked
Questions

We get asked a lot of the same questions by businesses looking for a new website or help with SEO. We’ve put together honest, plain-English answers to the most common ones below. If your question isn’t here, give us a call on 01235 507535 or drop us an email at info@el6apps.com — we’re always happy to chat.

Costs & Pricing

It depends on what you need, but we believe in being upfront about pricing. A simple brochure website for a small business typically starts from around £100 per month on our managed plans, which includes design, development, hosting, maintenance, and support. More complex sites with e-commerce, booking systems, or custom functionality will cost more. We offer an instant online estimator (Click Here) where you can get a guide price in about 60 seconds based on your specific requirements — no obligation, no sales call.

We offer flexible payment structures. Some clients prefer a one-off build fee followed by a smaller monthly hosting and maintenance charge. Others prefer to spread the cost with a monthly plan that covers everything. We’ll discuss what works best for your budget during our initial conversation.

No. We’re transparent about pricing from the start. Your monthly or agreed fee covers hosting, SSL certificate, regular WordPress updates, security monitoring, backups, and basic support. The only additional costs would be if you asked us to do extra work beyond the original scope — and we’d always discuss that with you and agree a price before doing anything.

No. Our services run month to month. We believe we should earn your business every month by delivering results and great service, not by locking you into a lengthy contract. You can cancel with 30 days’ notice at any time.

Every website we build includes foundational on-page SEO as standard — this means proper title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, image optimisation, mobile responsiveness, fast loading speed, and clean URL structure. If you want ongoing SEO work such as content creation, link building, local SEO management, and monthly reporting, that’s a separate service which we can discuss based on your goals and budget.

The Design & Build Process

For a typical small business brochure website, you’re looking at 3–6 weeks from start to finish. An e-commerce site or something with more complex functionality may take 6–10 weeks. The biggest factor is usually how quickly you can provide us with your content — text, images, and any specific requirements. We’ll agree a timeline at the start of the project and keep you updated throughout.

We’ll need an understanding of your business, your target customers, and what you want the website to achieve. In practical terms, that means your logo, brand colours (if you have them), the text content for your pages, and any images or photos you’d like to use. Don’t worry if you haven’t got all of this ready — we can help with content writing, photography, and even logo design.

Absolutely. We build your site on a private staging area that only you and our team can see. You’ll have the opportunity to review the design, request changes, and approve everything before we make it live. Nothing goes public until you’re completely happy with it.

Yes — you can view our portfolio at webdesignoxford.uk/portfolio. We’ve built sites for a wide range of businesses, including aesthetics clinics, holiday rentals, dance studios, management training companies, trade businesses, and tourism websites. We’re happy to share specific examples relevant to your industry.

Yes. While we’re based in Abingdon and many of our clients are in Oxfordshire — including Oxford, Witney, Didcot, Banbury, Bicester, and Wallingford — we work with businesses across the UK. Most of our communication happens via video call, email, and phone, so location isn’t a barrier.

WordPress & Technology

WordPress powers over 40% of all websites on the internet. We use it because it’s powerful, flexible, fully customisable, and — crucially — you own it. Unlike platforms like Wix or Squarespace, your WordPress website isn’t locked into a proprietary system. You can move it to any hosting provider, you can hire any developer to work on it in the future, and you have full control over every aspect of your site. It also has excellent SEO capabilities and a massive ecosystem of plugins for almost any functionality you could need.

Every website we build is fully responsive, meaning it automatically adapts to look great on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. With over 60% of web traffic now coming from mobile devices, this isn’t optional — it’s essential. We test on multiple devices and screen sizes before launch.

Yes. We provide reliable, UK-based WordPress hosting as part of our managed service. This includes daily backups, SSL certificate, security monitoring, WordPress core and plugin updates, and uptime monitoring. Having your hosting managed by the same team that built your site means issues get spotted and fixed quickly, rather than falling between two different providers.

We monitor our hosted sites for uptime and will be alerted if your site goes offline. In most cases, we’ll be working to fix the issue before you even notice. If something does go wrong, you can contact us directly and we’ll prioritise getting you back online as quickly as possible.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation — it’s the practice of making your website appear higher in Google search results when people search for the products or services you offer. If someone in Oxford searches “plumber near me” and you’re a plumber, SEO is what determines whether they find your website or your competitor’s. Over 90% of online experiences start with a search engine, so if your website isn’t visible in search results, you’re missing potential customers every day.

SEO is a medium to long-term strategy. You’ll typically start seeing improvements in rankings and traffic within 3–6 months, with more significant results building over 6–12 months. The exact timeline depends on your industry, competition, and the current state of your website. We provide monthly reports so you can see exactly what’s happening and track progress transparently.

No — and you should be wary of any agency that does. Google’s algorithm considers hundreds of factors, and no one can guarantee specific rankings. What we do guarantee is that we’ll implement proven, ethical SEO strategies, provide transparent monthly reporting, and work consistently to improve your visibility. Our approach is honest and sustainable — we don’t use shortcuts or “black hat” techniques that could get your site penalised.

Local SEO focuses on making your business visible to people searching in your geographic area — for example, “web design Oxford” or “accountant near Abingdon.” It involves optimising your Google Business Profile, building local citations, earning local reviews, and ensuring your website clearly signals your location and service area. General SEO covers broader strategies like content creation, technical optimisation, and link building that help you rank for non-location-specific searches. Most of our clients benefit from both.

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that appears on the right side of Google search results and on Google Maps when people search for your business or your type of service locally. It shows your address, phone number, opening hours, reviews, and photos. For any business that serves local customers, it’s essential — it’s often the first thing people see when they search for you, and it significantly impacts whether they choose to contact you.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. While traditional SEO focuses on ranking your website in Google’s standard search results, GEO is about making your business discoverable and recommendable by AI-powered search tools — things like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and other AI assistants. More and more people are using AI to find services and get recommendations. GEO ensures your website is structured in a way that these AI tools can understand, trust, and recommend your business when someone asks them a question like “who’s a good web designer in Oxford?”

The way people search for information is changing rapidly. AI assistants are increasingly being used as the first port of call for finding businesses and services. If someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview “recommend a web designer in Oxfordshire,” the AI needs to be able to find, understand, and trust your business information to include you in its answer. Businesses that aren’t optimised for AI discovery are becoming invisible to a growing segment of potential customers.

An llms.txt file is a relatively new standard — think of it as a cheat sheet for AI. It’s a simple text file placed on your website that tells AI search engines exactly what your business is, what services you offer, where you’re based, and which pages on your site are most important. It’s similar to how robots.txt tells search engine crawlers how to navigate your site, but llms.txt is specifically designed for AI language models. We implement these for our clients as part of our GEO service.

Very few, currently. Most web design and SEO agencies in the UK are still focused entirely on traditional search engine optimisation. GEO is a new and rapidly evolving field, and we’re one of a small number of agencies actively implementing GEO strategies — including llms.txt files, AI-optimised schema markup, and conversational content structures. This gives our clients a genuine head start in AI discoverability before the market catches up.

Our GEO service includes creating and implementing llms.txt files, adding comprehensive structured data (schema markup) that AI engines can read, restructuring your content so AI can easily extract and quote key information about your business, establishing your business as a recognised entity across the web, and monitoring how AI platforms respond to queries about your industry and location. We also create FAQ content and conversational page structures that match the natural language people use when asking AI assistants questions.

E-Commerce

Yes. We build e-commerce websites using WooCommerce on WordPress. WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce platform in the world and gives you full control over your products, pricing, shipping, and checkout experience. Whether you’re selling physical products, digital downloads, or services with online booking, we can build a shop that works for your business.

WooCommerce supports all major payment gateways including Stripe, PayPal, Square, and WorldPay. We’ll help you choose the right payment provider for your business and set everything up securely. All our e-commerce sites use SSL encryption to protect customer data during transactions.

Absolutely. WooCommerce has an intuitive product management system where you can add new products, update prices, manage stock levels, create discount codes, and view orders — all from your WordPress dashboard.

Working With Us

We’re based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire — about 6 miles south of Oxford. We serve businesses across Oxfordshire including Oxford, Witney, Didcot, Banbury, Bicester, Wallingford, Henley-on-Thames, and the surrounding areas. We’re always happy to meet in person for a coffee and a chat about your project, though we also work with clients across the UK via video call and email.

You’ll work directly with us — Colin and Lianne. We’re a small, dedicated team, which means you get personal attention from the same people throughout your project. There are no account managers or junior staff between you and the people actually building your website. When you call or email, you’re speaking to the people who know your project inside out.

We don’t disappear after launch. All of our clients receive ongoing hosting, maintenance, and support as part of their monthly plan. This includes keeping WordPress and all plugins updated, monitoring security, running daily backups, and being available when you need help. Many of our clients have been with us since the beginning — we build lasting relationships, not one-off transactions.

Yes. If you need help writing the text content for your pages, we can assist. We understand that not everyone finds it easy to write about their own business, and getting the tone and messaging right is important. We can write SEO-optimised content that clearly communicates what you do, who you serve, and why someone should choose you — all in plain, jargon-free English.

Yes. If you need a logo, we can create one as part of your website project or as a standalone service. We also help with brand colours, typography choices, and creating a consistent visual identity across your website and marketing materials.

We do. Professional photos make a huge difference to how a website looks and feels. Stock photos are fine in some situations, but nothing beats real images of your team, your premises, and your work. We can arrange professional photography as part of your website project.

Technical Questions

Schema markup is invisible code added to your website that tells search engines and AI exactly what your business is, what services you offer, where you’re located, and other key details. Think of it as a machine-readable business card. Without schema, search engines have to guess what your website is about by reading your content. With schema, you’re telling them explicitly. This leads to richer search results (like star ratings and business information appearing directly in Google) and better AI discoverability.

A responsive website is one that automatically adjusts its layout and design to look good on any screen size — whether that’s a large desktop monitor, a laptop, a tablet, or a mobile phone. Rather than building separate mobile and desktop versions, responsive design uses flexible layouts that adapt. Every website we build is responsive as standard.

WordPress is our primary platform and what we recommend for the vast majority of businesses. However, we have experience with other platforms and can advise you on the best option for your specific needs. If you have an existing website on another platform and are considering a move to WordPress, we can help with that migration too.

Yes. Every website we build and host includes an SSL certificate (the padlock icon in your browser), which encrypts data between your website and your visitors. We also implement security best practices, including regular WordPress updates, security plugins, malware scanning, and daily backups. If you’re running an e-commerce site, we take extra measures to ensure payment data is handled securely.

Your website is yours. Because we build on WordPress — an open-source platform — you’re never locked in. If you decide to move on, we’ll provide you with a full backup of your website files and database, and help facilitate a smooth transfer to your new hosting provider. We don’t hold websites hostage or make it difficult to leave. We’d rather you stayed because you want to, not because you have to.
